Tigrayan War Routing Towards Afar Region

The Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has launched operations in the neighboring Afar region as part of a geographical extension of the violent struggle between the regional Tigrayan administration and Ethiopia’s official government.

In late June, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration proclaimed a one-sided ceasefire. It withdrew from Tigray’s capital, while the TPLF’s onslaught in Afar foreshadows a lack of collaboration measures needed to alleviate Tigray’s mounting humanitarian catastrophe.

As the violence spreads over Tigray, Amhara, and now in the Afar region, food scarcity and the fear of famine threaten to swallow the whole of Ethiopia.

Hunger Strikes & Home Displacements

Since the Ethiopian military withdrew at the end of June following months of brutal combat, just a trickle of relief has made it into Afar, where more than 90% of the population requires food assistance. Thousands of civilians have been murdered, and millions have been displaced across the Afar area due to the violence.

Hunger and malnutrition rates are rising as a result of conflict-related displacement. According to our recent health screening reports, malnutrition rates for children under the age of five were found to be at an approximate 28%, significantly higher than the normal emergency threshold of 15%.

The war on the Tigray-Afar border has recently intensified, causing more populations to flee their homes and sink further into poverty.

Operations in Afar Region – HAWE

Health and Wholeness Ethiopia is working to improve people’s lives in the Afar area as well. Throughout the conflict, we have been extremely sensitive to every event taking place in the different regions of Ethiopia.

We’ve worked with various NGOs and public-service organizations to bring about change in order to aid and uplift people. Hunger control, women’s empowerment, and children’s education are just a few of our primary areas of assistance.

We recognize that other areas require our attention as well; therefore, we recruit volunteers and form partnerships with organizations so that we can make a positive difference in the lives of as many Ethiopian families as we can.

By providing relief to the Afar region, we hope to help people in the area sustain their lives during this bloody conflict that they have no part in. By helping NGOs provide healthcare equipment and food relief to the affected areas, Health and Wellness Ethiopia aims to accomplish their mission. In this mission, we need your support to give us as much power against the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front as we can get.
